Red-light cameras a hot issue in League City [cameras]

It may be stuck in the midst of six other propositions, but the question of what to do about League City's red-light cameras has been the hot one.Take the stress out of driving with a Reversing Camera. With the start of early voting Monday, voters in League City will finally have their say on Proposition 5.If it is approved, the city would be prohibited "from entering into future contracts for photographic traffic enforcement systems on public rights-of-way" once the current contract with Redflex Traffic Systems expires in 2014.

A "for" vote would stop future use of red-light cameras, while an "against" vote would allow the city to continue using the cameras.Arguments for and against the cameras have been made by council members, residents and travelers who drive through the city. Proponents, such as the members of the Police Department's Safelight Program, have said the cameras help bring awareness to the city's intersections and have cut down on accidents.Opponents say the cameras are an intrusion of privacy and a money grab by the city or the camera company or both.

Outspoken anti-camera activist Byron Schirmbeck, who lives in Baytown but said he drives through League City regularly, has said the cameras make roads less safe. He claims the city misrepresents the yearly accident numbers.Last month, the city published a new accident report that looked at accident totals from two years before cameras where installed in September 2009 to the present. According to the city's figures, there were a total of 90 accidents at the three intersections where cameras are now operating from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008, the time frame used for reports by the state.
